Sloth Re-Release

This is my first rescue and re-release of a wild animal. We rescued an 18-month old female two-toed sloth from the park in town and released her about 45 minutes away near the Costa Rican border in Cardenas.

This is Radwan. He is the son of a friend of my dad's who lives in Managua. He was suddenly inspired (by a few beers earlier) and climbed the tree.

Then Annie clibmed up after him and helped pull the sloth, who we named Aerial, down from the tree. Dr. Jim is directing her where to let her down.
This is the sloth, scared to death that she's no longer in her tree. There were tons of people around.
As you can see, she didn't make it easy for us. My face says it all...
We tried to wrap her in a sheet so that she could be safe and so that she wouldn't skewer us with her three inch nails but she did NOT want to go in there.
After careful instruction by yourst truely, we got her in the sheet and home.
In nature, sloths hang from tree limbs and branches. Unfortunately we couldn't provide limbs and branches for her so she tried her hardest to hang from the bars of the dog kennel.
She was very shy and very sweet, but she did have teeth!!
This is where we released her- about an hour from San Juan del Sur near Cardenas.
We took her to some property owned by the Piedras y Olas hotel.

It took her about an hour to get up the tree. And she was going fast!!
Happily ever after, in her natural habitat, Aerial ate to her heart's content. Hopefully she will reproduce and have lots of little sloth babies.
